GERD is very uncomfortable, but it is good that the management for it can be quite simple if the condition has yet to garner any complications. Depending on how bad a particular person suffers from GERD, some people can benefit from the simple position therapy while others are not as lucky, needing medications or even surgery. Though hospitals and doctors already give out sufficient general information in managing GERD, sometimes people need additional information but going back to the doctor may be too costly or impractical. Thankfully, in today’s times, people who suffer from GERD can easily communicate with each other via support groups. With those support groups, people can easily share their own experiences in managing GERD. With a support group, you know that you are not the only one afflicted with GERD, and with them you can share your confusions and your own method of managing your condition. Many people who suffer from GERD or any medical condition for that matter, sometimes try to use unconventional methods to try to alleviate their sufferings. Things like herbal medication, folk remedies or alternative medical practices like acupuncture or even yoga are just some of the topics talked about by people in their support groups. For others, support groups are also a place where they can try to find some answers for their questions like what food or medication can precipitate a reflux. Crucial or very specific information are sometimes not included in pamphlets or in the teachings of doctors or hospital staff. Like in the lifestyle or dietary modifications needed, most often pamphlets only provide general information. Some people need information that is more suited to their ethnicity. Some food that a particular group of people count as a delicacy but may cause refluxes may not be listed in pamphlets. A support group may know about the consequences from eating that particular delicacy, so it is always wise to do a little questioning in your support group. Treatment may also differ from person to person, and there are many kinds of treatment that can manage GERD. First and foremost, avoiding instances of reflux is always a wise idea; so preventive treatment comes first. If prevention does not work, a remedy would then be needed. For most people, prevention of refluxes comes in the form of positional therapy or simple lifestyle changes. However, such preventive measures may not work for you a hundred percent of the time so you may be tempted to opt for medications like H2 blockers, but it is always better to first try other measures like folk remedies first. Some folk remedies may be enough to prevent or remedy your reflux problems. A few example of folk medicine that have substantial evidence in countering the reflux experienced by GERD sufferers include:
Depending on the person, a certain treatment may be beneficial. Imagine the number of benefits you could gain by trying out a mixture of different remedies that work for other people suffering from the same condition. Just remember to test a remedy one at a time because your body might not be able to cope with sudden changes especially with medication. |
